Client Testimonial
“As the VP of Talent, I knew this search would be difficult. The candidate pool was small, the expectations were high, and our CEO was not going to lower the bar for anyone. SalesFirst became an extension of our team throughout the process. They took the time to understand what success looked like, interviewed candidates thoroughly, and consistently teamed up with me to get someone worthy across the finish line. The hire has been a tremendous addition to our leadership team, and it wasn’t easy!”
Challenge:
A Florida-based SaaS company serving media, entertainment, and subscription-based businesses needed a Director of Sales to strengthen its enterprise sales organization.
The company sold into organizations across television, streaming media, music, digital content, publishing, and other subscription-based environments. Most of its revenue had come from companies that found them through referrals, industry visibility, and inbound demand.
Leadership wanted to create a more predictable enterprise sales motion built around outbound opportunity creation. Large media and subscription organizations involved multiple stakeholders across finance, technology, security, product, operations, UI/UX, procurement, and executive leadership. Deals were complex, slow-moving, and highly scrutinized.
The client needed a sophisticated sales leader who had personally sold and led multi-threaded enterprise deals. The strongest profile included experience with eight-figure opportunities, long sales cycles, committee-based buying, technical evaluation, financial justification, and formal sales methodologies such as MEDDIC, MEDDPICC, Challenger, Miller Heiman, or similar enterprise frameworks.
The compensation package was well above market average, but the qualified candidate pool was extremely small. The client understood the difficulty of the search and committed early that compensation would not be the reason they lost the right person.
The biggest challenge was the CEO.
His interviews were thorough, direct, and intense. Candidates were expected to explain complex deals in detail, defend their thinking, walk through stakeholder strategy, and demonstrate command of enterprise selling under pressure.
Several candidates we considered exceptional struggled in those conversations. Some lost confidence. Others became defensive. Some could not support their experience with the depth and specificity that the CEO expected.
The company needed someone with the substance, composure, and enterprise sales experience to earn the CEO’s trust.
Solution:
The search began with detailed alignment around the enterprise sales motion the company wanted to build.
We worked with leadership to define the difference between candidates who had benefited from inbound demand and candidates who had created complex enterprise opportunities through disciplined outbound selling.
Because of the importance of the role, the client engaged SalesFirst through a Strategic Search. Strategic Search is reserved for leadership and business-critical positions where the cost of a hiring mistake significantly outweighs the cost of a longer and more thorough search process.
The engagement included a six-month guarantee, dedicated market mapping, executive-level outreach, deeper candidate assessment, and ongoing calibration with the client throughout the search.
We targeted sales leaders from SaaS, media technology, AdTech, MarTech, subscription technology, billing platforms, customer experience software, and other enterprise environments with complex buying committees.
As the search progressed, we learned that candidates needed to clear two hurdles. First, they needed the enterprise sales experience required for the role. Second, they needed the confidence, executive presence, and depth of knowledge to earn the CEO’s trust during a highly demanding interview process.
We adjusted our assessment process accordingly. Candidates were challenged to explain real deals, stakeholder strategies, qualification methodology, forecasting decisions, and lessons learned from opportunities that were won and lost. The goal was to evaluate candidates with the same level of rigor they would encounter later in the process.
We also spent significant time preparing finalists for CEO interviews. Candidates needed to be ready for detailed discussions around enterprise deal strategy, leadership philosophy, forecasting accuracy, and organizational development.
The search focused on leaders who could teach enterprise selling, coach account executives through complex opportunities, and help the organization build a repeatable outbound motion for large strategic accounts.
