Account Executive
Client Testimonial
“Adam was crystal clear from day one. He asked a lot of questions, challenged our assumptions in a respectful way, and was always fair and helpful. He helped us build a hiring plan that fit the reality of our business, and we just hired someone who starts in three weeks.”
Challenge:
A bootstrapped financial software startup was preparing to hire its first salesperson. The founders had handled all sales themselves and generated limited early revenue. Their software introduced a unique approach to financial services, including a usage-based pricing model similar to Snowflake.
They wanted a seasoned enterprise sales professional who had closed complex, high-value deals and could help shape the company's go-to-market strategy. The compensation package made that difficult.
The base salary was below what proven enterprise sellers typically earned. The company did not yet offer benefits, and the founders were hesitant to hire candidates with high compensation expectations. They hoped equity would make up the difference.
In San Jose, experienced technology sales professionals understand the potential value of equity. They also understand the risk. With limited revenue and no outside funding, candidates had to believe in the founders, the product, and the long-term opportunity.
Solution:
Early in the search, it became clear there was a gap between the profile the founders wanted and the opportunity they were offering. We shared current compensation benchmarks, discussed candidate expectations, and walked through the tradeoffs between salary, benefits, and equity.
The founders had two realistic options: They could increase compensation and benefits to compete for an experienced enterprise seller, or adjust the profile.
They chose to adjust the hiring strategy.
The search shifted toward a strong mid-market Account Executive who could build a pipeline, close smaller opportunities more quickly, and begin generating recurring revenue. The goal was to establish a solid foundation of ARR before investing in an enterprise sales hire.

- ▸ We introduced candidates who matched the strategy and understood what it meant to join a startup company
